Mother’s Day is celebrated around the world as a day to show appreciation for mothers or mother figures. In Canada, the second Sunday of May each year is dedicated to Mother’s Day. One way many show their appreciation is by giving a gift. But what do you do when your mom already has everything and doesn’t drop you any hints on what they want? How about making something, spending some time with your mom, or doing something nice for them. Sometimes it’s more personal than buying something they may not need. In this post, I share some ideas and DIY gifts for showing your special mom that you appreciate and love her – and all while not breaking the bank.

In the garden
Spring Garden Clean-up: Mother’s Day is the perfect time of year to clean up the garden to make way for the new season ahead. For a few years in a row, my siblings and I would meet at my parent’s house and do a major clean-up of the front garden. After the clean-up, we would lay fresh mulch down and plant flowers for the season. Bonus points if you have kids and they paint rocks to display in the garden!

Homegrown fresh vegetable plants: My family has a small vegetable garden in the back and we grow our vegetables from seed. I grow a few extra plants and hand them out as gifts to my mom and sister (who is also a mom to twin boys). This gift has the potential to keep giving over the summer.

In the kitchen
Family Recipes: Spend some time with your mom learning how to make favourite family recipes. Document the steps and snap pictures of the dishes. My mom and I did this over the course of a summer and turned the recipes into a printable cookbook. Or, make it personal by handwriting out the recipes on craft card stock. I love this craft recipe card stock.
Homegrown Herb Garden: Similar to the vegetable plants. We grow basil and parsley from seed as well. These also make great gifts to the mom who loves to cook.
Sourdough Starter: Start a starter or divide one you already have on the go. Place in a cute jar with a wooden spoon. Include recipes for your favourite sourdough recipes handwritten out on the craft recipe cards mentioned above. For sourdough recipe ideas, visit my sourdough recipe page!

For the mom with a sweet tooth: Assemble all the ingredients to her favourite dessert in a decorative basket. Alternatively, make the dessert and drop it off with a bottle of her favourite drink.
Cook her a meal: Make her favourite meal with all the sides and bonus add her favourite dessert and drink.
Mother’s Day DIY Home Spa
Pick a combination of or all of the below DIY spa recipes and place them in cute mason jars. Wrap the jars in a decorative basket and include a note for instructions on using the products or setting the mood for the spa day. Make it a date.

Moisturizer/Hair Treatment: This will be the easiest DIY spa treatment on this list. Add coconut oil to a cute jar. Write out a note describing its many uses. Use as a deep hair treatment at the start of the spa day but applying to hair from roots to ends. Coconut oil is also a great moisturizer for dry skin. Apply to the dry skin on your heels and put on a pair of fuzzy socks. Bonus Tip: Melt the coconut oil before adding it to your jar. Place the jar with the melted oil in the fridge for 10 minutes to harden. This will give it a professional smooth look.
Lip Scrub: Mix 1 tbsp olive oil with 1 tbsp white granulated sugar. Gently massage over lips for 15 – 20 seconds and rinse off.
Eucalyptus Body Scrub: Mix equal parts coconut oil and white granulated sugar. Mix in a few drops of eucalyptus essential oil. Scrub all over the body for a refreshing exfoliating experience. Rinse off in the shower.
Scented Epsom Salts: Buy unscented Epsom salts. Add about 2 cups to a bowl and stir in a few drops of your favourite essential oil. I love using eucalyptus, but other good choices are lavender and citrus.
For the Grandma’s in your life

Have the kids create special art for their grandmothers. During the pandemic, my daughter made some art and mailed it to my mom. Ava was really proud that she got to mail her artwork and my mom was pleasantly surprised when she got a mail from Ava!
