In this post, I show you how I simplified my cleaning products with some DIY cleaners that really work. This post is a follow-up to my post on Simplifying Your Cleaning Routine where I give you 6 tips plus a free printable schedule.

Why do I DIY some of my household cleaners?

I have been making some household cleaners myself for a few years now. I love the sense of creating something practical that my family can use, that is both safe, eco-friendly and easy on the wallet.

As much as I love making my own cleaners, there are a few that I don’t bother with because I love the store-bought versions. They are all eco-friendly. I talk about them in my 6 Tips on How to Simplify Your Cleaning Routine post.

What you will need to get started

• Spray bottle. I like using clear bottles because they are esthetically pleasing to me, however, if you love colour, there are many colourful options to choose from. I’ve linked a few below.
  • Clear spray bottles

• Labels. To label the contents of the bottle. I use an embossing label maker but you could also print labels or use chalk labels.
  • The label maker I use is Dymo Embossing Label Maker
  • Chalk labels and chalk pens
  • Printer labels
  • Plain labels

Cleaning Products I Use Around The House

General All-Purpose Cleaner

• I use a spray bottle filled with 50/50 water and white vinegar to clean the kitchen counters (ours are quartz). I keep the bottle on the counter so it’s always within reach when it is needed. This cleaner also works great on the glass stove top, on the stainless steel appliances, inside the fridge, and on my daughter’s chalk and dry erase board which is also in the kitchen.

Home Gym Cleaner

We have a small but functional home gym in the basement. It contains a weight cage, some freehand weights, a ball, a bike, and our yoga mats. After each workout, we spray down the equipment we used with our homemade antibacterial recipe. I love using this recipe because the essential oils act double-duty – cleanse and add a fresh scent to the air.

Essential Oil Gym Cleaner

In a spray bottle, add the following ingredients and give a few shakes to mix.

• 10 drops tea tree oil
• 6 drops lemon
• 1/4 cup white vinegar
• 3/4 cup water

DIY Floor Cleaner

• Rubbermaid Spray Mop allows you to use your favourite cleaner. DIY finished hardwood floor cleaner: Mix 2 cups water and 1/2 tsp dish soap. I add this directly to the bottle that comes with the mop.
