April is Earth Month! An entire month dedicated to raising awareness of the fragile state of the planet we call home. It’s a time to reflect on our own sustainability efforts and learn what else we can do in our personal lives, in our community, in our schools, and at work.

April 22, 2022, is Earth Day. The theme for Earth Day 2022 is “Invest in Our Planet” – www.earthday.org
This is the moment to change it all — the business climate, the political climate, and how we take action on climate. Now is the time for the unstoppable courage to preserve and protect our health, our families, and our livelihoods.
For Earth Day 2022, we need to act (boldly), innovate (broadly), and implement (equitably). It’s going to take all of us. All in. Businesses, governments, and citizens — everyone accounted for, and everyone accountable. A partnership for the planet.

I encourage you to research Earth Day events in your local area and get involved. I also encourage challenge yourself to incorporate small changes to live a more sustainable life.
Below I’m sharing the small changes my family incorporated into our lives. And remember that small changes in the right direction, have big positive impacts in the long run (if you stick with it)!
Leave the car at home
We’ve been lucky to continue to work from home. It has allowed us to reduce our carbon footprint by eliminating our commute. We walk to school daily (except on a few extreme weather days) and even walk to local shops more. Leaving the car at home means less pollution and more money in our pockets.
My challenge this summer is to ride my bike more when running errands around the neighbourhood. We got a bike trailer last year and it is the perfect way to carry home groceries.
Reduce food waste

Over the last year, we have reduced our food waste by better planning our meals and getting creative with leftovers. Below are recipes that are great for reducing food waste by helping you use up your leftovers.
Sourdough Pizza dough, is the perfect base to use up a variety of leftovers, like meat, vegetables, and cheese! Get creative – almost anything goes on a pizza.
Sourdough Tortillas, same comments as with the pizza dough. Almost anything goes in a tortilla!
Not sure what to do with tomatoes that are starting to wilt? Try Tomato Feta Pasta or make a Tomato Soup
Leftover chicken? Turn it into a White Bean Chicken Soup
Are your potatoes starting to sprout or go soft? Try my Loaded Potato Soup recipe
Making more sustainable swaps
Switching to more sustainable products is good for the planet!
- Switch throw away plastic food storage containers for glass or food-grade silicone. My favourite silicone food storage containers are made by a brand called Stasher. I’ve been using these for a few years and they have held up nicely.
- Switch from tree-based toilette paper to bamboo toilette paper. The brand we are currently using is Caboo Tree-Free Bamboo Toilet Paper.
- Loaded up on high-quality microfiber cloths for the kitchen and in turn, reduced significantly our use of paper towels. My favourite brand is MakersClean. From this line, I’ve purchased their bath towels, cleaning cloths, and makeup remover clothes – which by the way eliminates the need for one-time use of cotton balls or pads.
- Period undies have reduced my period waste. I use these by Neione.
- Use reusable overnight underwear instead of disposable pullups.
