I first learned of zoodles (spiraled zucchini) when I was following a low-carb/keto diet. Zoodles were included in many keto-friendly recipes as an alternative to traditional flour-based kinds of pasta. The first time I tried it I bought a package of zoodles from my local grocer for 3x the cost of the zucchini. I loved it but explored making it at home – I mean how hard could it be to spiral a zucchini?

What Tools you will need to spiral vegetables
There is a slew of tools on the market that will make spiraling your own vegetables at home a breeze. But if you don’t want to invest in a dedicated tool, you probably already have one at home. A potato peeler. Yup, a potato peeler works well for flat thin slices of zucchini. If you are looking for more of a spaghetti-like shape, then I would recommend using any of the below recommended tools.

- Handheld Spiraler
- Starfrit
- OXO Good Grips – this is the most similar to the one I use

What vegetables can you spiral?
Zucchini is the most popular of vegetables for spiraling, however, you can also try any of the following. I’ve linked to a great resource on Spiralling for beginners by Lacey Baier. She has a lot more detail including tips and tricks which I found helpful on my spiraling journey.
- Carrots
- Cucumbers
- Daikon
- Purple Cabbage
- Summer Squash
- Sweet potatoes
How to make Zoodles
I generally spiral 1 medium zucchini per adult which will fill up a pasta bowl nicely.
- Wash and cut off both ends of the zucchini, (no need to peel the skin – it’s delicious).
- If you are using a potato peeler, use the peeler in the same way as you would to remove the skin but keep going until the whole zucchinni has been peeled, or
- If you are using a vegetable spiralizer, follow instructions to spiral the zucchini. The one I have is simple to use. You place the prepped zucchini on one end and turn, zoodles come out the other end.
- Place in a bowl and serve with your favourite sauce. I love making this Tomato Feta Sauce and pairing it with zoodles.
